"RIVERWALKER" Chapter #13, Red River
Excerpt
"The quiet cemetery strolls filled a special need in Karl Adler. Standing over tombstones, gazing at family names carved in stone confirmed in him the lack of any feeling of connectedness or belonging. This was to his liking. To Adler, all was just grass, stones, and sky. Nothing more. No sadness, no weeping, no imagined faces or voices there. On the nightstand next to his bed, a photograph told Adler all he cared to know of Grandpa Otto and Otto’s sister, Marie: cheery faces and smiling eyes, hugging each other like a happily married couple. As for Adler’s father – Heinrich - if he ever wanted that face before him, it was easily produced. But none of the Adlers were truly here, at the graveyard. Only grass and trees and headstones. Karl walked slowly, reviewing the names, stopped where he always stopped, at the two together: Ernst and Dorothea Adler, died September 1921. The Great Flood of 1921, he thought.
Drowning. To gasp, choke, feel the terrible pressure of water surging into lungs. After the initial panic, a brief dream-like episode of relaxation and surrender. Suffocation. So what? It’s all death. All death.
Karl Adler was certain he was right about that."
