"In the meantime, Heinrich became less attentive to Eva, projecting the persona of an unattached man.  He wore expensive suits and shoes imported from Italy; diamond rings on both hands; gold bracelets and watches.  He frequently appeared about town behind the wheel of his flamboyant cherry red Mercedes with its interior of white goat skin.  Women commented on the deep russet of his hair and Van Dyke beard, how they offset and intensified the blueness of his eyes; they wondered about the gold necklace with inverted cross pendant he sported around his neck, and the riding crop he carried."
